TABITHA

Tabitha had chuckled through the movie, even though she’d seen it many times before. A good Christmas movie never lost its appeal though, and she hoped to watch this one many more times in the future.

She’d felt warm and contented as she’d sat on the sofa with Merlin next to her, one hand lost in his shaggy grey fur, the other holding her delicious hot chocolate. Across the room, the tree lights had glowed, the baubles occasionally catching the light and taking on what Tabitha thought of as a magical quality. And then there had been Ivy and Zach, sitting side by side, laughing and casting longing glances at each other when they thought Tabitha wasn’t looking. The way the two youngsters clearly felt about each other delighted her. She’d seen that they were holding hands, presumably hoping the darkness of the room hid it from her, but she didn’t miss much.

Tabitha hoped they’d open their hearts and accept how they felt because she wanted to see them happy more than she wanted anything, and if them getting together could be her Christmas gift then she’d long for nothing else.

Time alone might be just what they needed, so she stood up and yawned loudly, pretending not to notice as Ivy and Zach snatched their hands back. ‘That was fabulous, but I’m exhausted so I’m going to head off to bed.’

‘Really?’ Ivy stood up too.

‘Yes, dear. But don’t let me spoil your evening. You and Zach put another movie on or go have another snowball fight.’

Tabitha watched as Ivy glanced at Zach but his expression was the same; wide eyed, startled, a smile twitching at the corners of his mouth.

‘Oh go on, you two, you only live once.’

‘I’ll see what’s on the planner,’ Zach said, picking up the remote control. ‘Night, Tabitha.’

‘Goodnight, my darling and thanks for a wonderful day.’ Tabitha leant over and kissed his head on the way to the door and he smiled up at her.

Ivy came to her side and before Tabitha knew what was happening, her niece was embracing her. ‘Night, Aunt Tabitha. I had a wonderful day too.’

‘I’m so glad, Ivy.’

Tabitha kissed Ivy’s cheek. ‘See you in the morning.’

She went to the kitchen and placed her mug in the sink then filled a glass with water before heading for the stairs. It had been an enjoyable day and she hoped there were many more to come.
